Grasshopper Sparrow

(Ammodramus savannahrum)
Grasshopper sparrows have reproduced successfully in Middle Pasture for two consecutive springs. Each of the past two years, up to three adult males have been seen and heard calling from a prominent perch in the tall grass, or from a fence post. On June 15, 2011, while walking uphill just inside the High Knolls by the cattle guard, I flushed an adult grasshopper sparrow from the grass. When I inspected the area where it flushed, a flightless juvenile grasshopper sparrow skittered just ahead of my feet into the dense grasses.
